How does Coaching work?

  • Assess your skills & goals

    In order to lead, you’ll need to develop the vision of where you want to go, and where you need to grow. You and I will work collaboratively to determine appropriate goals, and the steps you need to take to get there. This may or may not involve formal assessment tools.

  • Move into action

    You and I will meet at least 3 times a month to assess your progress towards your goals and trouble shoot any barriers in the way. You also have access to me via email or chat anytime.

    I will also likely assign activities for your own reflection to work on outside of our sessions. These are vital to continue making progress and keep you engaged.

  • Complete the goal

    I work with clients over the course of 4 months to get them closer to, if not complete past the finish line. New goals or areas for development may pop up over our time together, which we may or may not work on immediately

FAQs

What kinds of things can coaching help with?

You probably went to school to learn all of the technical skills in your career, but usually we don’t have an opportunity in school to learn about managing others and leadership. In general, I help people clarify their work/career goals, become a leader, improve their interpersonal skills at work, work on stress reduction and self-care practices, and building leadership skills to attract followers.

How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is entirely goal focused, whereas therapy is about managing and healing a mental health concern. Individuals in coaching are functioning well in their lives, and want to take it to the next level, and those in therapy are often times just trying to get back to their baseline. Another way to think about it is that coaching is future-oriented, and therapy is often times focused on healing the past.

Can you be my therapist and my coach?

No. It’s very important that these two roles be distinct from one another. If over the course of coaching with me, we discover that therapy would be helpful, I will refer you to another provider. Coaching may continue while you work in therapy, or we may take a break.

What kind of work did you do while you were in corporate?

I mainly worked to create wellbeing programs for employees of the organization. Sometimes this meant working with and understanding the needs of specialized groups, and sometimes it meant creating a program for the whole company and implementing it. I also served as a subject matter expert and consultant to the business when matters around mental health came up, such as crisis situations, selection of vendors, and working along side of HR teams to create policies and procedures that were trauma-informed.

How can I pay for coaching?

Sometimes, your company can help pay for coaching services related to your professional development. Check with your HR or Learning & Development Team to see if stipends or reimbursements might be an option for you to use with coaching. Depending on your level in the organization, you may also be able to get budget allocated for coaching services, so always consider asking your manager if that is a possibility as well.

How long will you coach me?

It depends on your goals, but I typically engage with coaching clients for a 4 month period with weekly or biweekly meetings.
